Facts About Lice:
**Anyone can get head lice. It doesn't mean you are dirty.
**Head lice are never found on pets or wildlife.
**Head lice cannot jump or fly. They can only crawl onto your head if your head touches the head of a person who already has lice.
**Head lice cannot live on a desk, chair, or cubby.
**People can get rid of lice with special combs and treatment shampoos that are purchased at a drugstore in combination with cleaning the home and other areas the child's hair has come into contact with.
NEISD Policy:
A child with nits (eggs) may finish the day at school but must be treated prior to returning to school the next day.
A child with live lice must be sent home that day and treated prior to returning to school.
A child with lice or nits will be checked once they return to school prior to entering classroom again.
A child with lice or nits will be re-checked periodically to insure there ins't re-infestation.
How to Treat Lice:
1. Wash the hair with normal shampoo without condition and rinse.
2. Apply product for lice treatment (active ingredient: permethrin 1%) and allow to soak for recommended time per product instructions and then rinse.
3. Remove nits with fine-toothed comb and by hand.
4. Wash all bed linen, blankets, stuffed animals and pillows in hot water and dry on hot.
5. Wash all caps, coats, sweaters, hoodies, or clothing that has come into contact with child prior to treatment.
6. Vacuum around mattress, headboard, and bed to remove all possible areas of contamination. Vacuum car upholstery and other home upholstery that may have come into contact with child's hair.
7. Clean all hair brushes, combs, and hair accessories that have come into contact with hair prior to treatment.
8. Do not reuse towels used on head prior to treatment.
